Do You Need to Play Control Before Control: Resonant?

What carries over thematically and what stands alone for new players.

Official pages present Control: Resonant as a new Control game you play as Dylan. They do not list the first Control as a required purchase. Prior games add story context; Resonant teaches its own melee combat.
How It Works
Players control Dylan. The Gap is a dreamlike build space tied to Dylan’s psyche.
Control Resonant is built around melee combat with the Aberrant rather than the Service Weapon gunplay loop of the original Control.
This is not a Service Weapon shooter sequel in gameplay terms. If you only played the original Control, expect Aberrant melee, Combat Abilities, and The Gap instead of the old gun loop.
Story context
Names, places, and Bureau history will land harder if you know the earlier Remedy games. That is context, not a verified mechanical lock. Official store and blog copy introduce Resonant as its own campaign.
